And August 29 is actually a particularly busy day at the Ocean Institute.

One of my favorite things about activities at the Ocean Institute is the location.

The Institute sits at the end of Dana Point Harbor, so there is plenty to do before or after your visit.

You could visit the Ocean Institute in the morning, participate in the Sea Star Feeding at noon, have lunch around the harbor and spend the afternoon walking along the waterfront or enjoying one of Dana Point's beaches.

For families searching for things to do in Dana Point with kids, it offers a great combination of education and a day by the ocean.

Parking deserves some advance planning, especially during summer weekends.

The Ocean Institute advises visitors that its parking lot is reserved for Ocean Institute and Coffee Importers guests, while its lot and nearby public parking areas operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Summer parking can become limited, so the Institute recommends arriving early and allowing extra time to find a space.

For a noon Sea Star Feeding appointment, I would plan to arrive substantially earlier and enjoy the general admission exhibits first rather than trying to arrive just before the feeding starts.

Parking is probably the single biggest thing I would plan ahead for.

Summer is extremely busy in Laguna Beach, and the Festival advises visitors that there is no general parking directly at the Festival of Arts facility.

Paid public parking lots and metered spaces are available throughout Laguna Beach, but they can fill quickly.

A particularly convenient alternative is the free Laguna Beach trolley system, which serves locations along Pacific Coast Highway and Laguna Canyon Road and provides access to the Festival area.

My suggestion: arrive earlier than you think you need to. It gives you time to park, explore the Festival and enjoy the evening instead of rushing to an 8:30 p.m. show.

Make a Full Laguna Beach Day Out of It

One of the reasons the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters are such popular Orange County summer events is that they're easy to combine with everything else Laguna Beach offers.

You could spend the afternoon at the beach, explore the galleries and shops downtown, have an early dinner and then visit the Festival before the Pageant begins.

In addition to the carnival and entertainment, you'll find plenty of opportunities to shop.

The Modern Makers Mart will feature vendors offering handmade products, jewelry and other locally made goods, and the festival will also include a Vendor Promenade and community booths.

It's a great opportunity to discover local Orange County businesses while enjoying the festival.

The City of Laguna Niguel lists several parking options for festival attendees, including:

Bioluminescence is the ability of a living organism to produce light.

In the ocean, microscopic organisms can sometimes create brilliant flashes of light when the water around them is disturbed. Under the right conditions, that can result in the incredible blue-green glow Southern California beachgoers occasionally see illuminating waves at night.
