Set Sail for a Cannon Battle
One of the signature experiences of the Dana Point Maritime Festival is the Cannon Battle.
Guests can board a historic tall ship and sail off the Dana Point coast while learning about maritime history and experiencing a mock cannon battle at sea. You'll get an up-close look at towering rigging, working sails and life aboard a traditional sailing vessel.
Cannon Battle experiences are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
Tall ship sailing participants must be at least 4 years old.
Sails 'n' Ales – Friday Night
Adults can kick off the festival Friday evening with Sails 'n' Ales, a 21+ event happening September 11 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
The evening includes beer tasting and live music along with access to Ocean Institute attractions. Guests can also check out the aquariums, shark exhibit and Discovery Pool sea star touch tank.
Food trucks will be available, and guests can participate in the festival's Pilgrim stew tasting competition.
It's a fun way to start the weekend before the main Saturday and Sunday festivities.
Free Things to Do at the Maritime Festival
You don't necessarily need a ticket to enjoy the atmosphere.
Several festival areas and experiences are free on Saturday and Sunday, September 12–13.
Live Music & Beer Garden
Enjoy live bands, games and the festival beer garden from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.
Peddler's Village
Browse local businesses, craftspeople, handmade goods, food trucks and vendors from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM both days.
Pirate Adventure Show
Pirates take over the Spirit of Dana Point for live shows at 10:45 AM and 1:15 PM on Saturday and Sunday.
It's an especially fun stop for families with younger kids.
Sailor Camp
Step back in time with sailor reenactors and living-history demonstrations. Sailor Camp runs from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday and Sunday.
Pirate Experiences for Kids
Young adventurers can take their pirate education a little further with School for Scallywags.
Led by Cap'n Will, the interactive experience teaches kids pirate and maritime skills aboard the Spirit of Dana Point. The program is particularly recommended for children around ages 5–8, although parents can decide whether it's a good fit for their child.
Tickets also include a Festival Adventure Pass.
Mermaid Experiences
Pirates aren't the only characters coming to Dana Point Harbor.
The weekend also features several special mermaid experiences, including:
- Mermaid Swim Shows
- Mermaid Tea by the Sea
- Mermaids & Mateys Breakfast
- Mermaid meet-and-greet experiences
Some mermaid experiences include additional activities such as photo opportunities, story time and access to the Ocean Institute and visiting ships.
These are separately ticketed events, so it's worth planning ahead if they're high on your family's list.
Festival Adventure Pass
For visitors who want to explore more of the Ocean Institute and the ships, the Festival Adventure Pass is available for Saturday and Sunday.
The pass provides access to Ocean Institute exhibits and tours of the visiting ships and is valid for both days of the festival.
Some specialty experiences, including certain pirate and mermaid events, require an additional ticket.
Parking for the Dana Point Maritime Festival
This is important to know before you go:
There is no on-site festival parking at the Ocean Institute.
Festival organizers recommend using parking in Dana Point Harbor and taking the free Dana Point Trolley to the Ocean Institute.
The recommended trolley stop is N7B: Baby Beach / Ocean Institute.
Because this is one of Dana Point's major annual events, give yourself extra time to park, catch the trolley and check in—especially if you have a timed ticketed experience.
Make a Day of It in Dana Point
One of the best things about the Maritime Festival is its location.
You're already at the southern end of Dana Point Harbor, making it easy to turn your festival visit into a full day around the coast.
Explore the harbor, grab lunch or dinner nearby, walk along the waterfront or spend some time around Baby Beach before or after the festival.
And with Dana Point Harbor continuing to evolve, events like the Maritime Festival are a great reminder of just how much the harbor contributes to the character of the community.
Living in Dana Point
Events like the Maritime Festival are part of what makes living in Dana Point so special. You have beaches, boating, incredible coastal scenery and a calendar filled with community events—all while still being close to the rest of Orange County.
If you're thinking about buying or selling a home in Dana Point or South Orange County, I'd be happy to help you learn more about the local market, neighborhoods and current opportunities.
